In fiscal year 2011, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will initiate a formal Offshore Wind Program to promote and accelerate responsible commercial offshore wind development in the United States. During the Webinar, "Creating an Offshore Wind Industry in the United States: A National Vision and Call to Action," the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), Wind and Water Power Program will outline its vision to guide the United States in creating a world-leading offshore wind industry. A "world leading offshore wind industry in the United States" will achieve 54 gigawatts of offshore wind deployment at a cost of 7-9 cents per kilowatt-hour by the year 2030, with an interim target of 10 gigawatts at 13 cents per kilowatt-hour by 2020.

This Webinar will also issue a call to action for the nation's resources to mobilize and harmonize in addressing the substantial barriers to offshore wind deployment.

To facilitate the discussion portion of the Webinar, the DOE Wind and Water Program would like participants to submit questions ahead of time to susan.hinnen@nrel.gov so that we can address them on the 1-hour Webinar. Questions will be accepted from now until September 15.

The first Fall Roundtable of 2010 focuses on renewable energy's future in New England. Renewable energy installations of all types (wind, biomass, solar, landfill gas) have been proliferating in New England, while Renewable Portfolio Standards continue to ratchet-up. At the same time, recent developments have introduced significant uncertainty into the renewable energy markets in New England. These include the failure to enact federal legislation to price carbon, the uncertain status of future federal renewable tax credits, the TransCanada law suit, the EIPC transmission and renewable planning process, and the biomass study for MA DOER by Manomet.

The two panels at the September Roundtable will examine the net effect of these and other factors impacting renewable energy development in New England. One will be a high level, cross-cutting panel whose speakers will share their expectations about the future of renewables in New England. A second panel will dive into the complex world of biomass carbon accounting and sustainable biomass issues.

The Restructuring Roundtables are free and open to the public. Advanced registration is not required.

The Restructuring Roundtable has been meeting bimonthly since 1995 to discuss current topics related to revolutionary changes in the electric power industry in Massachusetts and throughout New England.

NEED Sessions at Kentucky Association of Environmental Education Conference

Please see the Web site for more information.

Great Lakes Wind Collaborative 3rd Annual Meeting

Date: 9/19/2010 to 9/21/2010
Location: Cleveland, OH
The Annual Meeting will bring together representatives of U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, state/provincial and local governments, the wind industry, electric utilities, nonprofit organizations, academia, and other interested stakeholders to discuss and address issues regarding the sustainable development of wind energy in the binational Great Lakes region. There will be a pre-meeting event on September 19.

Montana's Challenge: Rethinking Education for the 21st Century

Date: 9/20/2010 to 9/21/2010
Location: Helena, MT
Some of the most critical policy decisions affecting the future of every Montanan are the local, state, and federal commitments made to education at all levels. Many argue that access to educational opportunities is the principal ingredient in breaking the cycle of poverty among our poorest families, responding to the rapidly changing technical demands of new and evolving jobs, and adding value to both the services and products offered by Montanans. If we can no longer be seen as insulated from other states within our region, the nation, or the world, then what commitments must be made if Montana's educational system is going to create the opportunity for Montanans to be competitive in the 21st century? The Burton K. Wheeler Center's Fall Conference will focus on the most pressing questions to be faced by educators, legislators, administrators, business interests, parents and students. How can we and how will we rethink education in this century?

This free Webinar will provide information on how utilities can develop renewable energy education programs for schools and enhance existing programs. Webinar participants will:

Get an overview of renewable energy opportunities in schools,

Receive information on national and regional energy education outreach programs and activities,

Understand how to communicate the benefits of renewable energy technologies, and

Learn the experiences that utilities have had in implementing renewable energy education outreach programs.

School districts everywhere are installing, or at least considering installing, renewable energy systems as a way to reduce operating costs, and those that haven't thought about it might if they knew more about the benefits. Utility professionals seeking to encourage schools in their service territory to adopt renewable energy should sign up for the Webinar.

Lower electric bills are only one of the advantages renewable energy offers schools, but installing a system is a significant investment. This Webinar will give pointers on communicating the benefits of a variety of renewable systems to educators and their communities. A wind turbine or solar panel is a great tool for teaching science, and can also be incorporated into lessons on geography, economics and social studies.

Students get to discover a field that offers future job opportunities, and communities can take pride in generating some of their own power. Also, the Western Area Power Administration and the other contributors to the Webinar — National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Learn Energy, and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) — recognize the importance of providing renewable energy education at all levels of learning. With this knowledge, future generations will be able to make more informed and long-range decisions.

"Renewables for Schools" is an overview of renewable opportunities, rather than a "how-to" for project development. In addition to wind and solar systems, the agenda will also touch on geothermal power and power production from biomass. The Webinar's target audience is utility professionals; however, teachers, school administrators and other interested individuals are welcomed to attend. This Webinar will focus specifically on answering educators' questions.

Agenda

10:00 am Welcome and Introductions, Guy Nelson, Western Support Contractor

10:05 K-12 Solar Energy Education, Glen Kizer, LearnEnergy
