Economic Development from Wind Power: Recent Results from Two Novel Studies that Quantify Impacts from Existing Plants and Industry Activities: A WPA Webinar

This free webinar featured Cai Steger of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Ryan Wiser of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). Steger detailed recent findings of employment resulting from the development, construction, and operation of an illustrative 250-megawatt (MW) wind power plant. These results rely on original data gathered from a series of interviews across the supply chain, conducted to better understand the employment effects associated with 14 key industry activities. Steger's study indicates that nearly 1,100 jobs result from developing, building, and operating a 250-MW wind power plant and confirm prior findings that much of the economic development potential of the industry is in construction and manufacturing activities.

Wiser detailed the findings of a recently published collaborative study among the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service, LBNL, and NREL. This work relies on statistical methods to evaluate the actual (empirical) county-level impact from wind power development on personal income and employment, focusing on the effects from 2000 to 2008 in the wind-rich Great Plains and Rocky Mountain Region. Findings indicate that wind projects placed in service during this period resulted in net increases in income and employment within the counties where they were sited. Moreover, these results are noteworthy in that they support the conclusions of prior estimates derived from more conventional input-output modeling tools such as NREL's JEDI models.
