File: Assessing the Potential for Renewable Energy on Public Lands (PDF 4.5 MB) Download Acrobat Reader Date: 2/21/2003Richard Truly, Director, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and Rebecca Watson, Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management, Department of Interior's (DOI) Bureau of Land Management (BLM), announced the availability of of a new report, "Assessing the Potential for Renewable Energy on Public Lands." The report will help federal land managers prioritize land-use activities that will increase development of renewable energy resources on public lands in the western United States (except Alaska). The report provides the results of a study conducted by NREL for DOI and the Department of Energy (DOE) on renewable energy resources on BLM, Tribal, and Forest Service lands. The sources of renewable energy addressed in the report include wind, solar (photovoltaic and concentrating), biomass and geothermal energy.
Donna Heimiller, Wind Powering America Team, led the Geographic Information System data assessment for the report. Ed Cannon, Wind Powering America Team, led
the related wind technical and policy analysis for the project. The project, coordinated by Doug Dahle, Federal Energy Management Program Services (FEMP) has led to a dramatic increase of requests for wind development on BLM land, especially in Nevada. This information was last updated on 8/9/2011
