Planned Customer-Sited Wind Projects in New England

Massachusetts

Customer-sited wind projects in Massachusetts gained further traction with businesses and communities actively seeking to develop projects consisting of one or two commercial-scale wind turbines.

  • Bay Path Regional Vocational High School

Bay Path Regional Vocational High School in Charlton will conduct a feasibility study to explore the possibility of developing a project ranging from 600 kW to 1.5 MW.

  • Big Apple Farm

The Big Apple Farm 100-kW turbine is planned for construction in the Fall of 2009.

  • Cape Cod Community College

Cape Cod Community College has issued a request for proposals for turbine procurement and is ready to initiate the construction process once the turbine has been purchased.

  • Catamount Ski Area

Considering installing a turbine of 1 MW or less.

  • Deer Island

MWRA's 1.2-MW Deer Island project in Boston is expected to be operational by summer 2009.

  • Falmouth Hospital

Plans to explore the feasibility of installing a utility-scale wind turbine (500kW to 2000 kW) on its campus in Falmouth.

  • Gloucester Office Building

Planning to install a 100-kW wind turbine.

  • Governor's Academy

Governor's Academy in Newbury plans to undertake a feasibility study to explore the possibility of erecting a 600-kW wind turbine behind the meter on school grounds. The study is expected to be completed by August 2009.

  • Housing Land Trust of Cape Cod (Barnstable)

Will use its feasibility study to analyze the technical and economic aspects of installing up to 250 kW of wind power at the site.

  • Jiminy Peak Ski Resort

Became the first to integrate wind power into its energy strategy when it completed the installation of a GE 1.5-MW turbine at its Hancock facility in mid-July 2007. The Resort dedicated the turbine in a public ceremony on August 15th.

  • Massachusetts Military Reservation

The Massachusetts Military Reservation (Otis Air Force Base) will receive its 1.5-MW Fuhrlander turbine via the same shipment that is carrying PMLD's equipment. As a result, MMR expects to have its new turbine operational by summer 2009.

  • MBTA

The MBTA is expecting to install a 1.5-MW project by 2010.

  • Manchester Athletic Club

The Manchester Athletic Club is currently assessing the feasibility of installing either a 600-kW or 1.5-MW turbine at its Manchester-by-the-Sea facility.

  • Mark Richey Woodworking

Mark Richey Woodworking in Newburyport has completed the installation of a 600-kW wind turbine.

  • Sandwich

A 3-MW project in Sandwich is expected to be operational in 2013.

  • Staples in Framingham

The development at Staples in Framingham has recently been terminated due to insufficient wind speeds. After receiving a design and construction grant from MTC.

  • Templeton Municipal Light & Water Co.

The Templeton Municipal Light & Water Co., Ipswich Municipal Light Plant, and Berkshire Electric Cooperative collectively released a request for proposals for turbine procurement through MMWEC in August 2008. Results of the request for proposals for these three entities have not been announced yet.

  • Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head

The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head is currently pursuing a 3.75-MW project in Aquinnah that has a target operational date of 2011.

  • Williams' Stone Company

Williams' Stone Company in East Otis is ready to construct its 600-kW turbine.

In January 2009, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative announced its most recent grant recipients under the 6th (and possibly final) round of the Large On-Site Renewables Initiative (LORI). LORI awards grant funding for either design and construction or feasibility studies. Round 6 design and construction grant winners included four wind projects: shellfish cultivator and processor Aquacultural Research Corporation of Dennis (600 kW), Berkshire East Ski Resort of Charlemont (600 kW), MBTA's Kingston Station facility (100 kW), and Upper Cape Regional Technical High School in Bourne (2 MW). Round 6 feasibility study grant winners included eleven wind projects: City of Boston: Moon Island (100 kW to 2 MW), the Town of Chatham (50 kW to 225 kW), the Town of Hamilton (600 kW to 1.5 MW), the Town of Mashpee (100 kW to 2 MW), Masonic Health System in Charlton (1.5 MW), Northern Pines Farm in Tisbury (900 kW), Pocasset Golf Club (100 to 250 kW), Pumpkin Pond Farm in Nantucket (35 to 250 kW), Saint Joseph's Abbey in Spencer (600 kW to 2 MW), Tufts University Veterinary School in Grafton and Westborough (600 kW to 2 MW), and the Town of Wareham (1.5 MW).

Rhode Island

  • Narragansett Bay Commission

The Narragansett Bay Commission, a CREBs (Clean Renewable Energy Bonds) awardee, is proceeding with the technical evaluation of a single turbine in the 600 KW to 1 MW range, depending on FAA-imposed height restrictions. Narragansett Bay Commission will need to break ground in 2009 in order to preserve its federal funding. Contractors will be identified through a competitive solicitation.

  • Raytheon Portsmouth Rhode Island Wind Project

A 3-MW (two 1.5-MW turbines) proposed project at Raytheon's Portsmouth facility is expected to be operational in 2010. Raytheon is in the process of negotiating with construction firms.
