Discussion:

On September 25, 2008, Governor Carcieri announced that Deepwater Wind was chosen as the developer to construct Rhode Islands first offshore wind farm.

Upon completion, the project is expected to provide 1.3-million MWHs per year of energy — approximately 15% of all electricity used in the state. The project is expected to cost in the range of $1 billion to construct and will be financed entirely from private investment sources.

The project will be completed in two stages with the first part to be sited in state waters and the second stage to take place in federal waters. The second phase, planned for federal waters off of Rhode Island, will follow after the first phase, the New Shoreham Offshore Wind Project. Deepwater is focusing on developing that first phase for the time being, but anticipates that Phase 2 would follow within 2 years of phase 1.
