The Power County Planning and Zoning Board approved two separate plans to build large-scale wind farms south of American Falls. The companies have measured the wind for two years and now plans are contingent upon securing power contracts with any of the three electric utilities whose grids are accessible from near American Falls.

Windlend-Shell had plans approved Dec. 7, 2004 for an 80-turbine, $140 million wind farm, which would produce between 120 and 150 megawatts of electricity.

Ridgeline Energy received approval from the zoning board November 22, 2004, for a wind farm which would be built in phases, south and southwest of American Falls.

The city of Pocatello is also investigating wind. In mid-January 2005, the city decided to study wind conditions to identify locations good for building wind turbines. The city purchased an anemometer and borrowed another from the state.

The article discusses opinions about how state Legislature actions could lead to investments in wind energy. It also briefly discusses exempting wind energy production from sales tax.
