DOE Breaks Down Market Barriers with Online Technology Commercialization Portal

Date: 6/30/2010

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the launch of the Technology Commercialization Portal — an online resource that will serve as a tool for potential investors to identify opportunities to invest in work being conducted by DOE laboratories and participating research institutions. Traditionally, investors, entrepreneurs, and companies have faced substantial barriers when identifying clean energy technologies to license. The Technology Commercialization Portal will help reduce these barriers to investment providing capital markets with key information on the attributes, uses, benefits, and market-readiness of specific energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

The marketing summaries available online describe in detail what energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies are available for licensing, and each summary outlines a technology's applications, advantages, benefits, and stage of development. The Web site can streamline a search for specific technologies, or allow the user to browse by subject area. It can also connect investors and organizations to the proper licensing contact.

Additionally, the Portal provides the public access to information on about 14,000 patents and patent applications that have been created using DOE funding since 1992. These patents cover all areas of DOE research, from fossil energy to biotechnology, and are linked to marketing summaries when available.

Users of the portal can:

  • Browse more than 100 EERE-related technologies available for licensing
  • Search thousands of DOE patents and patent applications
  • Identify the total number of patents and technology marketing summaries contained on the site
  • Sign up for e-mail updates
  • Link directly to the DOE Laboratories that developed the available technologies to get more information.

The EERE Technology Commercialization Portal is one of the most effective ways for investors and companies to find promising technologies at the Department's national laboratories that can be effectively transferred from the laboratory to the private sector.

DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) focuses on broad market adoption of clean energy technologies. EERE's Commercialization Team focuses on building bridges between applied scientists and technology investors, and between the public and private sector, by connecting research and development activities with the venture capital funding and marketing necessary to move technologies to the marketplace. The team's goal is to increase the rate and scale of energy efficiency and renewable energy technology market penetration.
