Nebraska Public Power District and Princeton Municipal Light Department Receive 2010 Public Power Wind AwardDate: 6/22/2010The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Wind Program, through its Wind Powering America initiative, announced that Nebraska Public Power District and Princeton Municipal Light Department are co-recipients of the 2010 Public Power Wind Award at the American Public Power Association National Conference in Orlando, Florida. This eighth annual award honors the two American Public Power Association member organizations for their outstanding leadership, innovation, and project creativity through the use of wind energy technologies. The consumer-owned utilities were selected for the honor among 13 others nominated from across the United States.
Nebraska Public Power District has invested more than $80 million since 1995 in Nebraska wind power development and owns and operates the state's largest wind farm. The utility encourages future wind farm development by supplying subject matter experts to state wind working groups, providing financial assistance for schools participating in DOE's Wind for Schools project, and supporting legislation that promotes wind development while protecting ratepayers.
Princeton Municipal Light Department introduced wind power into its energy portfolio in 1984 and continues to invest in renewable energy. It frequently surveys and responds to customer interest in wind power and has used creative membership marketing strategies to lower the cost of additional wind power investments.
The annual Public Power Wind Award, formerly called the Wind Power Pioneer Award, is sponsored by the DOE Wind and Water Power Program in partnership with the American Public Power Association.
